The
Story of Anne... "The dearest and most moving and delightful child since
the immortal Alice..." That is how Mark Twain described her and when
you meet Anne of Green Gables, you will know why!
Irrepressible,
imaginative Anne Shirley comes straight from an orphanage in Nova Scotia
to live at Green Gables in Prince Edward Island. Her elderly guardians,
Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert do not realize what's in store for them.
Although they asked for a boy, soft-hearted Matthew is immediately enchanted
by the talkative little girl. Marilla isn't convinced, and wants to
send her back, but Anne's endearing ways soon win her over. The opinionated,
lively, 11-year-old red-head manages to be the center of mischief wherever
she goes.
First
published in 1908, Anne of Green Gables was Canadian author L.
M. Montgomery's first book. It immediately became a worldwide success,
selling millions of copies within the first few years after its initial
release. Since then, Anne has been made into feature films, stage
plays, musicals and several television series. The 1985 made-for-television
adaptation is known worldwide and was the forerunner of the popular
television series, Road to Avonlea, which is seen in over fifty
countries around the world. |
